Paging Tim Gunn

Too bad Palin has already used up her "one gay friend" allotment--she could have called Tim Gunn, although actually it looks like she's been following Tim's advice on wardrobe essentials:

The Little Black Dress: Wear it during the day with a jewel-toned cardigan and flats and accessorize it at night with a statement necklace and strappy heels.

The Trench Coat: The right trench can be worn with anything. Pull it over your little black dress for a night out or layer it over your T-shirt and jeans on the weekend.

The Classic Dress Pant: For the perfect night out pair a flowy silk or chiffon top with bright, high heels.

The Versatile Skirt: Dress it up with a tailored shirt or turtleneck or keep it casual with a t-shirt. Think about the skirt that looks best on your body and offers more options in your wardrobe.

The Fitted Blazer: Pull it over a feminine blouse and perfect-fit jeans for the weekend or a textured skirt for work.

The Classic White Shirt: Pair it with the other classics in your wardrobe like your versatile skirt or cashmere sweater for a clean polished look.

The Day Dress: Pair it with a statement necklace and basic pumps. Go for color with your shoes if the dress is a solid color, but stick with brown or black if the dress is printed.

The Cashmere Sweater: Layer it with anything from your perfect-fit jeans and a classic white shirt to a versatile skirt.

The Perfect-Fit jeans: The perfect jeans are flattering and work with all your wardrobe staples like a t-shirt and blazer for the weekend or a flowy blouse and sparkly jewelry for a night out.

Alternative to the track suit: Never wear a tracksuit or velour sweat suit (not even on the plane or at the gym). If you need a comfortable outfit try leggings with a detailed t-shirt, interesting hoodie and casual flats.

Are the "foot-in-mouth" moments and the gigantic credit card bills making McCain think that his new "third wife" might be a little less attractive than when he first met her at the cocktail party? The two of them sat for a joint interview with Brian Williams on NBC, which will play out over a few nights on the Nightly News. "There was a tenseness," Todd told MSNBC's Chris Matthews. "I couldn't see chemistry between John McCain and Sarah Palin. I felt as if we grabbed two people and said 'here, sit next to each other, we are going to conduct an interview.' They are not comfortable with each other yet."

Palin still has a bit of trouble with this whole "what the heck is a pre-condition" thing too. How hard is this to understand?? The irony is that HuffPo report that apparently back in 1987, McCain was the one trying to get President Reagan to meet with an anti-communist, Mozambican "guerilla" group called RENAMO--without preconditions.

Campbell Brown took issue with the double standard applied to Palin versus the men in the campaign, arguing, rightly I think, that women are judged more harshly on their appearance than men are. But, Campbell, I'm sorry, I still don't think that means that anyone but Palin should pay for those clothes, and I certainly don't think she needs $150,000 worth of them to look good. Let's get real here, when Princess Diana first hit the world stage, she used to get the editor of UK Vogue to help dress her, and let me tell you, it did not cost Buckingham Palace $150,000 a month to keep her in fashion.

Folks, file this stuff away, because if Sarah Palin makes another bid for higher office in 2012, as is rumored (!!), I want you to dust off these rants and remember that this woman is a selfish, self-serving, arrogant know-nothing, who is not above using her own children as props to her political advancement, feels no hesitation about using other people's money for her own purposes or her political office for her own gain. She knows little enough about governance, but what is worse, resorts to blustering nonsense to cover it, instead of actually learning what she needs to know. As absurd a spectacle as she has made herself in this election, I have no doubt we'll be hearing more from her in future.

McCain's Camp Pain

This is the graphic on the Sacramento County Republicans' official website. It's been taken down, but the very fact that it could be posted on an official site for the Republican party says a lot about where this race has gone--and it ain't pretty.

It's stuff like this that sends Keith Olbermann--not to mention the rest of us-- on his high dudgeon in a new Special Comment on the McCain campaign's violent tendencies. As Paris Hilton is fond of saying, "Loves it.":

"Sen. McCain, your supporters, at your events, are calling Obama a terrorist and traitor and are calling for him to be killed. And yet you keep bringing back these same rabid Right Wing nuts to deliberately stir these crowds into frenzies....There are some things to respect and honor about you, Sen. McCain, but on this, you're not only a fraud, Senator but you are tacitly inciting lunatics to violence. If you want to again grand-stand and suspend your campaign here's your big chance. Suspend your campaign now, until you, or somebody else, gets some control over it and it ceases to be a clear and present danger to the peace of this nation."

And as usual, the Daily Show nails it again with the "levels of crazy here," in an Aasif Mandvi segment.

Campbell Brown, in her inimitable and darling Campbell Brown way, appeals to the candidates directly to cut the bull: "From both candidates, we need real answers. And please don't tell us that you are going to cut pork barrel spending and scrub the waste out of every bloated federal agency. I mean, name a political candidate who hasn't promised to cut the fat and eliminate waste in government. Please, no bull. Be straight with us, we can take it. Americans understand the stakes. Just give us brutal honesty, because so far we are not really getting it."

Culture Check

Not-Alaska's Favorite Governor

Yesterday's Anchorage Daily News published a searing editorial about Palin and the Troopergate report. Um... I don't think she's America's Favorite Governor anymore... "Sarah Palin's reaction to the Legislature's Troopergate report is an embarrassment to Alaskans and the nation. She claims the report 'vindicates' her. She said that the investigation found 'no unlawful or unethical activity on my part.' Her response is either astoundingly ignorant or downright Orwellian....In plain English, she did something 'unlawful.' She broke the state ethics law. Perhaps Gov. Palin has been too busy to actually read the Troopergate report. Perhaps she is relying on briefings from McCain campaign spinmeisters. That's the charitable interpretation. Because if she had actually read it, she couldn't claim 'vindication' with a straight face."

The Culture Check

Campbell Brown continues to be our national gadfly. On Monday, Brown "issued a sharp indictment of the underlying prejudices of Arabs and Muslims that give rise to such toxic rhetoric in the first place: "So what if he was? So what if Obama was Arab or Muslim? So what if John McCain was Arab or Muslim? Would it matter? When did that become a disqualifier for higher office in our country? When did Arab and Muslim being dirty words, the equivalent of dishonorable or radical?... Of course he's not an Arab. Of course he's not a Muslim, but, honestly, it shouldn't matter."

Good thing Campbell's not a conservative. Those pundits who lean in the conservative direction, but who have come into the light and endorsed Obama find that there's been ...blowback. William F. Buckley's son Christopher writes that "within hours of my endorsement appearing in The Daily Beast it became clear that National Review had a serious problem on its hands. So the next morning, I thought the only decent thing to do would be to offer to resign my column there...While I regret this development, I am not in mourning, for I no longer have any clear idea what, exactly, the modern conservative movement stands for. Eight years of "conservative" government has brought us a doubled national debt, ruinous expansion of entitlement programs, bridges to nowhere, poster boy Jack Abramoff and an ill-premised, ill-waged war conducted by politicians of breathtaking arrogance. As a sideshow, it brought us a truly obscene attempt at federal intervention in the Terry Schiavo case. So, to paraphrase a real conservative, Ronald Reagan: I haven't left the Republican Party. It left me."

On the other side of things, Obama picks up an endorsement from the AFL-CIO. I guess the union's statement on 2nd Amendment rights is where we have to be on this...? Just keep saying to yourself, "Coalition-building, coalition-building...": "I want to protect two things: my job and my gun. That's why I'm supporting Barack Obama."

And on his new Chocolate News show on Comedy Central, comedian David Allen Grier points out to anyone who doesn't want to vote for a black President, that Obama is only half-black--so "for the white folks who still can't bring themselves to pull that lever, just vote for the white half."

Political Rant: the Daily Digest

So here's the Convention update:
George Bush was quarantined well away from the people who are trying to actually, as it were, win this election. But he got to talk--for les than ten minutes....I love the Big Brother look of this. How does the old song go...." From a distance you look like my friend, even though we are at war..."

Then to Fred Thompson. You know, I'm really thinking we should thank John McCain. He's created a HIGHLY entertaining situation in which Republican after Republican must now line up and defend this obvious disaster of a candidate. Here's what Fred came up with: "She has run a municipality and she has run a state. And I think I can say without fear of contradiction she is the only nominee in the history of either party who knows how to properly field-dress a moose." Um... yeah. I'm sure her country will be calling on her for that. Unless we can get to Polarica in China Basin or Bud's Custom Meat in Penngrove. In which case WE DON'T NEED HER.

On to old Joltin' Joe Lieberman, who likes to jump from party to party looking for the best Champagne. Here is a video-transcript of Joe Lieberman's speech at the NY Times. The advantage of taking it in this way is that the Times allow you to move around between the sections and skip it when you feel your vomit reflex curdling up. Do seek out this special line: "The Washington bureaucrats and power brokers can't build a pen strong enough to hold these two mavericks." My stomach gurgles as I type.

Obama campaign's Robert Gibbs responds that it's "a different Joe Lieberman from the one that called Barack Obama in 2006 and asked him desperately to come to Connecticut and campaign for him." Ya think?

And since Joe brought Michael Moore into this--seriously, he brought him up first!-- Michael, if you please?

More gaffe-awes: we all got a nice chuckle when RNC Co-Chair Jo Ann Davidson, extolling the virtues of our next vice president, called her Sarah...Pawlenty. (Does she know something we don't?)

Speaking of Governor Palin (say it, PAY-lin. PA-a-a-a-ay Lin) Apparently the McCain Camp's latest strategy is to fall back on -- what i that I hear? the "same old" --strategy of blaming the media for all the ills of the world. When in doubt, roll out the sputtering indignation. Apparently, says Campaign Strategist Steve Schmidt, the Big Bad Media is "on a mission to destroy" Sarah Palin. No, Steve, they're um... just doing what YOU should have done-- ask questions.

And speaking of asking questions, how's this for familiar ground: McCain' camp is so upset at Campbell Brown's brazen display of journalistic chops in asking Tucker Bounds, "Can you just tell me one decision that she made as commander and chief of the Alaskan National Guard, just one?" that McCain canceled his Larry King interview (WSJ) in retaliation.

Today, in a staunch show of "Don't Talk About The Kids," the RNC flew the poor kid who supposedly fathered Bristol Palin's child to St. Paul, and staged a photo-op with those Disgusting Media Types at the airport. But don't talk about them. But take a picture of the family. But don't talk about them. And Levi, goshdarnit, YOU WILL HOLD HER HAND!!

Okay, we need an Unintentional Humor break

McCain Campaign manager Steve Doocy: "But the other thing about [Sarah Palin], she does know about international relations because she is right up there in Alaska right next door to Russia."

Cindy McCain: "You know, the experience that she comes from is what she's done in government, and remember, Alaska is the closest part of our continent to Russia."

Really? This is where you want to go with this? Ooooookay..... From Daily Kos, a reader speculates on what the Palin-Lives-Near-Russia-So-She's-A-Foreign-Policy-Expert theory of Proximity/Absorption Intelligence Design might mean:
  • Maine borders Canada, so I'm a foreign policy expert.
  • The Atlantic Ocean laps at the Maine coast, so I'm now a marine biologist and a Coast Guard Admiral.
  • I live next to a Burger King, so I'm a Chef de Cuisine.
  • I live next to the Dollar Store, so I'm qualified to chair the Federal Reserve.
  • An old lady lives next door, so I'm president of the AARP.
  • I live "next to" the moon, so I'm a NASA rocket scientist and an astronaut.
  • I live close to a church, so I'm the Pope. (Okay, a Pope)
  • There's a parking lot across the street, so I'm in line to be the next Secretary of Transportation.
  • I am a high-priced prostitute and there are...um...actually, there are no high-priced prostitutes anywhere near me.

Meanwhile... somewhere in America...

Obama is scheduled to be on Fox's O'Reilly Factor Thursday night, but for the most part the Obama Biden campaign has been awfully quiet, you say. Or...maybe...not.... While the national news media trips over themselves to cover Hurricane Sarah (And please, please, go ahead, COVER IT) Obama and Biden are quietly at work on key swing states. Apparently someone still remembers how the last two elections were "won."

I'm happy to see Obama at 50% in the national polls, but some of us remember that you can win the popular vote and still um.. wind up not being president...? Instead, I offer you Electoral maps, both left leaning and right leaning, that show Obama ahead in the electoral vote count and edging upwards toward that magical "270" number in swing states. Notice that many of them don't even give 2000-2004 problem-states Ohio and Florida to Obama. But enjoy Obama and Biden... at work out of the spotlight...

The man is a strategist, as the London Times points out. He's looking to the long haul, and things like national media attention, scrutiny of Sarah Palin, outrage over Joe Lieberman and the ramblings of Fred Thompson, while entertaining (Oh, my Lawsy, SO entertaining) don't make a difference.
